A Father’s Day Tribute: Lessons from "The Real World"

With Father’s Day on the horizon, we wanted to take a moment to celebrate all the fathers in our community. To start, we’d like to share a little bit about Matt’s dad—whom we affectionately called “Papa Bob.” Papa Bob was a lifelong boating enthusiast. When he passed away last fall, we told his friends and our family that he hadn’t truly left us; he had simply "left the dock" to begin cruising the rivers of eternity.

The Gift of a Love Letter

Years ago, Matt asked his dad to write a “Love Letter” to the family. After years of resistance and procrastination, Matt finally used a bit of "tough love" to get it done. He told his dad, “If you don’t have that letter with you, don’t bother getting on the plane to visit for Christmas!”

Sure enough, Papa Bob showed up with the letter in hand. What a blessing it has been since his passing—two simple pages of timeless, priceless life lessons.

Living Large Frugally

Papa Bob was a real estate professional who worked his fair share of nights and weekends. He was always “on call,” firmly believing in working hard to earn the opportunity to have fun. In his letter, he wrote:

“Everyone has the same 24 hours in a day; it’s what you do with them that matters most.”

He was passionate about living life to the fullest without needing to spend a fortune. When Matt was a toddler, his dad saved up just enough to buy a small, aged steel-hull houseboat. One evening, after dropping friends off at the dock, one of them said, “Well, back to the real world.” Papa Bob replied, “This IS the real world!” Pop wanted to show that through hard work, anyone could enjoy this lifestyle. And that’s how his boat got its name: The Real World.

The Best Sunsets are Mortgage-Free

Matt remembers asking him one day, “Dad, how come everyone else has these big, fancy boats and we don’t?”

That answer eventually made it into the letter, too. He told Matt, “What do you mean? We’re experiencing the same water, the same beaches, and the same sunsets as they are—and we have no mortgage on this boat!”

Lesson learned. By living humbly and below his means, his “real world” became others’ dream world. He lived without the pressure of "keeping up with the Joneses," and though we didn't always have the coolest car and for many years his Dad lived in small apartments, we lived a charmed life on the dock every summer—just like pirates.

No Cash, No Splash

In his letter, Pop reminded us of the sign at the local marina boat launch: “No Cash, No Splash.” It was his simple way of telling us to work hard, save our money, and avoid debt so that we could truly enjoy our lives.

Honoring the Fathers in Your Life

This Father’s Day will be our first without Papa Bob. He was a one-of-a-kind Dad and a doting grandpa to Dominic and Christian.

But enough about our dad—what about yours? We hope this story inspires you to remember that life is precious. You never know when you might lose the chance to express your love, capture that story, or find peace:

  • If you’ve been distant: What are you waiting for? Take that step toward reconciliation.

  • If he’s still with you: Consider asking him to write his own "Love Letter." It could be the greatest blessing your family ever receives.

  • If he has passed: Find a special way to celebrate his memory. And remember, his legacy lives on in you!

As for us, you can guess where we’ll be: on the boat, listening to Pop’s favorite music and telling epic tales of the St. Croix River, King’s Cove Marina, and Lumberjack Days.

We hope all the fathers out there feel celebrated and loved this year. Until next time, remember to love yourself—and love your neighbor as yourself!
