What Greece Taught Us About Living the Dream
As Team Skally, our North Star is simple — to make lifestyle dreams come true. Recently, we decided to make one of our own dreams a reality by checking off a long-standing bucket list item: a trip to Greece.
After a year of planning, we were ready to experience the birthplace of democracy, marvel at architectural wonders, and indulge in the incredible food and beauty. But what we discovered went far beyond what we imagined. We left Greece with new perspectives — genuine epiphanies — about what a dream lifestyle could look like if we embraced some of the Greek ways of living.
The Surprising Truth About Greek Longevity
While reflecting on our trip, we learned that Greeks spend significantly less on healthcare than we do in America. In 2024, Greece’s average per capita healthcare spending was around $3,600, while in the U.S. it’s closer to $13,500. Yet, the average Greek lives five years longer than the average American.
So what’s their secret? Based on our experiences, we think these cultural habits play a big role:
1. No Horns Honking
Greeks drive a bit erratically — yet we never heard a single honk. No road rage, no middle fingers, no impatient outbursts. Even in situations that would have caused chaos in the U.S., everyone stayed calm. They simply didn’t let it bother them.
2. Biophilia Everywhere
Everywhere we went, people were surrounded by nature — greenery, fresh air, and water. Outdoor dining was the norm, not the exception. Many of our favorite meals were enjoyed on sidewalks, in alleys, or by the sea, surrounded by plants and sunlight. Even indoor spaces were filled with greenery, bringing nature inside.
3. No Phones
Unless someone was taking a quick photo, we rarely saw anyone glued to their phones. Not at meals, not while walking or driving, and not even on the beach. It was refreshing — people were present, not scrolling.
4. Efficient Use of Space
Space in Greece is often limited, yet it never felt that way. The Greeks are masters at making small spaces feel abundant — creative layouts, thoughtful design, and a knack for maximizing every inch.
5. Footsteps Over Freeways
People walk everywhere. Many also rely on public transportation. This constant movement keeps them naturally active and healthier — without gyms or fitness apps.
6. Connected Bottle Caps
We noticed that all plastic bottle caps were attached to the bottles. Apparently, this is to help recycling facilities keep caps out of the environment. Of course, no plastic bottles at all would be best — but when clean water isn’t easily accessible, this was a smart and effective compromise.
7. No Aerosol Bottles
Our sunscreen came in a manual spray bottle, not an aerosol can. Brilliant! It lasted longer, applied more evenly, and didn’t release fumes or chemicals into the air.
8. Family-Style Meals
We’ll never go back to ordering individual plates again! Meals in Greece are meant to be shared — multiple courses, lots of variety, and incredibly fresh ingredients. Nothing tasted pre-packaged or processed. Sharing meals made dining not just about eating, but connecting.
9. True Hospitality
At the end of every meal, we had to ask for the check — they didn’t rush us. The goal wasn’t to “turn tables” but to let guests truly enjoy the experience. Often, they’d bring a small dessert or digestivo “on the house.” Tipping wasn’t expected, which made our gratitude — and theirs — feel authentic.
10. Less Commercial Focus
We were amazed by how many businesses focused purely on the experience, not on monetizing it. One highlight was an olive oil farm-to-table visit. We kept waiting for the sales pitch — but it never came. No “join our club,” no gift shop push. Just genuine passion for sharing what they love.
Final Thoughts
Our trip to Greece was everything we dreamed of — and more. We came home inspired to bring some of that Greek calm, connection, and simplicity into our lives here in America.
If this story inspires you to visit Greece, we’d love to share our itinerary. In the meantime, may some of these lessons bring a little more joy, peace, and longevity to your one precious life.
